Tirupati -- Tirumala

I travelled to Tirupati yersterday (7th Jan) for Lord Balaji's darshan, by ITDC package tour. According to me ITDC package tour is the best way to go to Tirupati/Tirumala.

What makes it so good is that fact that, in this tour darshan is guranteed! Also you don't need to tie the band to your wrist and move from cage to cage. But you do need to still stand in line for around an hour during the last stage of the queue, but it is much less compared to what you would need to do with the Rs 50 wrist band pass.

A/C Volvo buses are used in the tour and that makes most part of the journey comfortable. After reaching Tirupathy they put you in a decent place for washing up. But on the flip side, they make 4 people share a room -- either 2 couples or 4 men or 4 women ... whatever combinations are available/possible.

You will need to shell out around Rs. 1035 for this package tour and that amount does not include breakfast for lunch (adequate time is provided for both). But it does include Tirupathy to Tirumala and back bus ride.

This particular package tour is available only on weekdays, so be ready to take a day off at work. Buses start from Swiss Complex on Race Course Road (Bangalore) and ITDC office at Badami House Opp. Corporation Office (Bangalore) is (Ph. 22275869/22275883/22212098) a pick up point. Tickets can also be booked at the above mentioned two places.

People in Jayanagar can book their tickets from East End Tours and Travels. They are the authorised agents for ITDC. Their office is in Susana Complex, 28th Main, Jayanagar 9th Block. Ph. 51209126/51209000/26587948/26585786

Udupi And St. Mary's Island

13/11/2004 - 11 AM

Spent half an hour in the Sun in Maravanthe and then left Maravanthe for Udupi. It was damn hot when we reached Udupi. Our first stop in Udupi was the Sri Krishna Temple. After standing in queue for an hour (30 minutes was in the Sun rest in shade) we could get darshan of Lord Krishna thru a small window. (Why window? There is a story behind it). This elephant near the Gaushala used to bless people by curling its trunk and hitting them on the head. Ouch! He did hit hard!

Then we drove towards Malpe Harbor. St. Mary's Island is 25 minute boat ride from Malpe harbor.

As it was a holiday ferry run by government was not operational. So the local fishermen were taking people to and fro in 50 Rs. The boats used were regular fishing boats and were overloaded. St. Mary's Island has a "shell beach" i.e. a part of beach had more shells compared to sand. Beach was clean and the rocks besides the beach were infested with lot of sea life viz. crabs, snails and small fish.

The black rock is pretty slippery, I almost slipped once ...

After having fantastic Udupi style lunch we left for Mangalore. Reached Mangalore at 4 PM and checked into a hotel for the night. For dinner we had, Mangalore speciality -- Kori Roti. It was amazing!

14/11/2004 - 7 AM
Next day early morning at 7 we left Mangalore for Bangalore. Mangalore - Bangalore road is just phenomenal.

One more picture.
During the day the ghat sections are both safe and beautiful. After an hour and half's drive we got Hotel Kamat on the way! Stuffed ourselves with breakfast and sped towards Bangalore reaching home by 2 PM!

The End

Maravanthe

13/11/2004 - 8 AM

Visited Murudeshwar temple right in the morning, without having breakfast.

Co-incidentally it was the Gujarati New Year day (Besatu Varas) and I visited a temple on the New Year day after lot many years, on that day: Mom will he happy ;)

Naveen Beach Resort serves excellent breakfast and I suggest you have breakfast there even if you are not staying there. We had bread-omelet, idli-vada and tea. After that we left "Shetty Land" for our next destination -- Maravanthe!

One can describe Maravanthe as - Sea and Highway! The part of beach where we stopped was clean and untouched!

One can have lot of fun if one is traveling to Maravanthe in a group. Sea is a bit dangerous so be careful during water sports. One can pre-arrange water sports like scuba diving and snorkelling, boat trip in the Arabian Ocean etc with Turtle Bay Resort or Soans Holidays.

Optical Illusion: Are the footsteps embossed or depressed?

Check out more picture of the same type.

After spending half and hour at Maravanthe we proceeded towards Udupi.

Next - Udupi/St. Mary’s Island and Mangalore.

Murudeshwar – Om Namah Shivay

12/11/2004 - 10 AM

Left Jog Falls for our next destination -- Gokarana. On way to Gokarana we stopped at Kamat Yatri Nivas that is located at the junction of NH 206 and NH 17 in a place called Honnavar.

Gokarana is famous for 3 things: Om Beach, Yana (black crystalline limestone) and hippies! Yes hippies, they still exist. The place sucks and according to me can be avoided. Spent a frustrating hour there before heading down to Murudeshwar.

Murudeshwar was just another pilgrimage spot till the local construction mogul RN Shetty developed it to a grand scale. 500 feet statue of Lord Shiva and an equally huge (and ugly) gopuram is the work of RN Shetty.

Some more pictures: Shiva and Gopuram, Shiva In Shade.
Don’t forget to visit the original Shiva temple where Lord Shiva is worshipped as “Aghora” – his ascetic form. The beach is flooded with tourists but is clean – Shiva’s miracle!

Everything in Murudeshwar either has the name of Naveen (RN Shetty) or RNS. We stayed in Naveen Beach Resort because that was the only place that had a bar! Food was cheap (175 per head including liquor) and good!
And the day ended with a fantastic sunset!

In all Murudeshwar is a nice place and I would recommend paying it a visit, just try not to get too angry about the concrete replacing the century old structures.

At this stage I would like to add that my respect for AirTel has increased a lot. They have covered every tiny town and village of Karnataka. It is very reassuring to have your mobile phone working in remote parts while going on self-driven long trips.

Next – Maravanthe and Udupi/St. Mary’s Island

Starting From Bangalore

"Let's Go!" -- That is how is happened! (Co-incidently we also have Alto VXi)

10/11/2004 - 10 PM
Searched Google and checked the car for the long trip ahead!

11/11/2004 - 10 AM
Started from Bangalore for Shimoga. NH4 via Tumkur is phenomenal. Specially the first 40 KMs of toll road. Except for 10 Kms of bad road, it was a good drive and we reached Shimoga by 4 PM. On the way you have Kamat Yatri Nivas which is an excellent place to take a break.

One more picture.

12/11/2004 - 7 AM
After spending a night in Shimoga, started for Jog Falls. Road was great and drive was picturesque!

One more picture.

Unfortunately Jog Falls was not in its usual might. It was hardly a fall; it was a trickle. :(
